The recently established PEER Center is committed to integrating social science211u001eand earthquake engineering research. How should integraion proceed. What can 211u001esocial scientists contribute to PEER's interest in performance-based engineering. 211u001eThese and other questions were addressed at a PEER Workshop on Planning, Policy 211u001eAnalysis and Economics in Earthquake Research which was convened (May 14-15, 211u001e1998) to help develop an appropriate research agenda. Day One featured three 211u001epapers by distinguished social scientists who were not known for previous 211u001eresearch in the earthquake field but who were expected to be insightful. Their 211u001epresentations as well as illuminating commentary from three discussants and 211u001espirited discussions from the workshop participants set the stage. Follow-up 211u001egroup discussions on Day Two sought to translate the discussions into tangible 211u001eresearch questions.
