摘要

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), a part of the211u001eNational Institutes of Health, is the primary Federal agency that conducts 211u001eresearch on alcohol use and its conseuqences. The important task of assessing the 211u001escope and consequences of alcohol use is carried out by NIAAA's Division of 211u001eBiometry and Epidemiology (DBE). One way in which DBE accomplishes this goal is 211u001ethrough the Alcohol Epidemiologic Data System (AEDS), which serves as a 211u001erepository of national-level data useful for alcohool epidemiology and as a 211u001eresource for analysis of such data. Another way in which NIAAA and DBE meet the 211u001eresponsibility of assessing the scope and consequences of alcohol use is by 211u001esponsoring and collaborating in the design of major data collection efforts by 211u001eother agencies. For example, three alcohol supplements to the National Health 211u001eInterview Survey (in 1979, 1983, and 1988) were partially funded by and designed 211u001ewith the collaboration of NIAAA. NIAAA also provided funding and technical 211u001eexpertise to the 1993 National Mortality Followback Survey. In addition, NIAAA 211u001ehas funded other data collection efforts through various grants and contracts.
