The conference was designed to promote the adoption of innovative approaches for211u001ehelping Americans enrolled in managed care organizations to avoid the harm caused 211u001eby tobacco. Discussions of new guidelines and standards namely the AHCPR Clinical 211u001ePractice Guidelines for Smoking Cessation, Implementation, and resaerch 211u001eopportunities were central to the conference. The conference objectives were to: 211u001eprovide opportunities for collaboration and sharing of best practices in tobacco 211u001econtrol among health plans and between public health and managed care; identify 211u001echallenges and forge effective solutions for implementation of systems for 211u001eidentification and treatment of tobacco use and addiction; discuss tobacco 211u001econtrol resources available to health plans and assist them in formulating work 211u001eplans to implement a tobacco control program and measure performance; and provide 211u001ean overview of the ATMC program and opportunities for funding of research 211u001eprojected. The objectives were met through an agenda that included general 211u001esessions and interactive roundtable sessions.
