In January 1994, the Nitrogen Fixing Tree Associated (NFTA) and the BAIFDevelopment Research Foundation began to plan an international workshop on NFTs for fodder. The workshop was held in Pune, India, March 20-26 1995. The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. S. K. Dorge, Vice-Chancellor of Mahathma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth in Rahuri, India. Forty-three individuals representing 18 countries participated in the workshop. They presented papers on their research or field activities and joint working groups that summarizes current knowledge on the management and use of nitrogen fixing fodder trees. Discussions during the workshop focused on fodder trees for South Asia and other seasonally arid regions. This proceedings volume and its companion field manual detail the many NFT management systems and service roles that contribute to fodder production for small-scale farmers.
