Heavy-Duty Truck Population, Activity and Usage Patterns

The objective of the study was to update the heavy-duty truck (HDT) population,211u001eactivity (e.g., vehicle miles traveled (VMT), numbers of starts and strips, strip 211u001eduration, etc.), and usage patterns type of service/business (e.g., delivery, 211u001econstruction, etc.), area of operation (i.e., local, short-haul, long-haul) for 211u001eHDT's registered and/or operated in California. The population and activity 211u001eestimates were done on a weight-class-specific basis light-heavy-duty, medium-211u001eheavy-duty and heavy-heavy-duty. Population, activity and usage estimates were 211u001ebased primarily on Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) registration data and Truck 211u001eInventory and Usage Survey (TIUS) data. In addition to the analysis of existing 211u001edata (i.e., DMV and TIUS), 42 HDTs were fitted with on-board dataloggers that 211u001erecorded numbers of trips ad starts, daily VMT and travel by time-of-day.
