Evaluation of Engineering Properties of Problematic Soils in Highway211 Construction. Phase I Study

This study presents the research effort to evaluate problematic A-2-4 soils in211u001ehighway construction. An experimental program was conducted to evaluate six 211u001eproblem soils. The soils were chosen by the Florida department of Transportation 211u001e(FDOT) because of past problems experienced during construction. A set of 211u001elaboratory tests was performed to determine the engineering properties of each 211u001esoil. A review of the current understanding of expansive soils in highway design 211u001ewas also conducted. The results of the experimental program showed that certain 211u001eengineering properties give a possible indicator of potential construction 211u001eproblems and can be used to screem A-2-4 soils before use in highway projects. 211u001eThe results also showed that the presence of expansive clay is not a conclusive 211u001eindicator of a problem A-2-4 soil.
