The authors present a technique for the estimation of power consumption in211u001easynchronous circuits through the modelling of transition switching activity. 211u001eUnlike most existing techniques for analytic (non-simulation) power estimation 211u001ethat use reachability state transversal and Markov chain analysis, the authors' 211u001emethod is based on an invariant analysis of Petri Net models using matrix 211u001erepresentations. This approach is in general more efficient than Markov chain 211u001eanalysis, due to the avoidance of state explosion, but may lose accuracy for some 211u001eclasses of nets.
