The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) published a Site211u001eReview and Update for the V&M/Albaladejo Farms site on May 7, 1997. The site 211u001eincludes the V&M property and the Albaladejo farm. Total acreage is unknown. 211u001eSeveral small plots within the site were formerly used for dumping plastic-coated 211u001eelectrical cables, electrical equipment, car batteries, and transformers. To 211u001etotal quantity of waste brought onto the site and the date when activities began 211u001eare not known. Some wastes were burned, presumably to recover copper, aluminum, 211u001eand lead. ATSDR prepared public health consultations in 1995 that concluded that 211u001esite soils posed a potential health concern and concurred with EPA's proposed 211u001ecleanup levels. EPA also will investigate groundwater quality to determine 211u001ewhether remedial activities are needed to protect the aquifer that supplies off-211u001esite public wells that serve large numbers of residents in Vega Baja. ATSDR 211u001econcluded that the site poses no apparent public health hazard. The proposed soil 211u001eremoval and proposed groundwater investigation and any required followup 211u001egroundwater remediation should minimize the potential for future exposures and 211u001eadverse human health effects.
