This is one of a series of documents providing support for deploying Intelligent211u001eTransportation Systems (ITS). This series addresses Traffic Signal Control 211u001eSystems, Freeway and Incident Management Systems , Transit Management Systems, 211u001eand Traveler Information Systems. The National ITS Architecture provides a common 211u001estructure for deploying these systems. An important point of these documents is 211u001ethat you can reap operational benefits while saving staff hours and design costs 211u001eby using the National ITS Architecture as a deployment guide. This document 211u001efocuses on traffic signal control systems, a component of ITS. It aims to provide 211u001epractical help for the traffic engineering community with deploying traffic 211u001esignal control systems in an integrated, multimodal environment using the 211u001eNational ITS Architecture. ITS is the application of management strategies and 211u001etechnologies to increase the efficiency and safety of national, regional, and 211u001elocal surface transportation systems. This document covers the basics of traffic 211u001esignal control ITS applications, the role the National ITS Architecture can play 211u001ein traffic signal control system project development, the development process for 211u001ea regional architecture, some challenges faced by traffic management agencies, 211u001eand some best practices and lessons learned for developing and deploying of 211u001eadvanced traffic signal control systems. The regional architecture will indicate 211u001ehow current and future systems in the region may be integrated to obtain the 211u001eadded benefits available through integration of these systems.
