A geographic information system (GIS) is a tool for effectively managing and211u001eanalyzing tremendous amounts of geographic information. It employs the essential 211u001eprinciple of geography to organize in formation and express relationships between 211u001ereal-world phenomena. In recent years, GIS has become increasingly important in 211u001esupporting decisions made in all sectors of government, including state 211u001edepartments of transportation (DOTs). Because GIS is a technology that is 211u001ecomplex, interactive, and evolutionary, its development and implementation demand 211u001ecareful study of such issues as needs, benefits/costs, specifications, and 211u001eimplementation plans. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has been a 211u001eleader in managing highway transportation systems. The GIS pavement management 211u001einformation system (PMIS) project will develop a comprehensive guide for 211u001eimplementing the most effective GIS capabilities to support TxDOT pavement 211u001emanagement and other transportation-related management. This research will 211u001eprovided comprehensive recommendations for various issues involved in 211u001eincorporating GIS into the Texas PMIS.
