A study was conducted at the Vehicle Research and Test Center to investigate roof211u001ecrush resistance in passenger vehicles. The objective was to determine the 211u001ecorrelation between roof crush performance measured quasi-statically and 211u001edynamically. A series of tests comparing quasi-static roof loading versus dynamic 211u001eroof loading was conducted to determine how static and dynamic tests can be 211u001ecorrelated and if static test can be transformed to a dynamically equivalent 211u001eresult. Nine vehicles were selected for the quasi-static tests. Subsets of this 211u001egroup were subject to (1) FMVSS 216 test procedure, (2) incremental crush 211u001etesting, and (3) modified crush angle (roll and pitch). Each vehicle was ranked 211u001efor performance, based on roof strength and stiffness. Based on the roof 211u001estructure performance of the quasi-static tests, six vehicles were tested by 211u001edropping them on their roofs (dynamic drop test). Dynamic force vs. crush and 211u001eenergy vs. crush were plotted. The slope of the dynamic energy vs. crush plots 211u001ewere compared to the static tests.
