Double Shear Timber Connections with Dowel Type Fasteners.

The load carrying capacity of a connection with a number of fasteners, a so called multiple fastener connection, does not equal the load carrying capacity of a single fastener multiplied by the number of fasteners, i.e. generally the connection fails at a lower load. The connection geometry, material properties and number of fasteners determine the load carrying capacity and the type of failure. This study concerns the strength of double shear single and multiple fastener timber to timber connections loaded parallel to the grain. The theoretical work is verified by tests carried out on bolted connections, for which the test specimens were made with European spruce.
