In 1954, John McLeod introduced a new optical element, axicon. The term axicon211u001eoriginates from two Greek words meaning axle and image. This first axicon was 211u001ejust a rotationally symmetric glass cone. This element transforms a nearly planar 211u001ewavefield from a distant point source into a continuous image line along the 211u001eaxicon axis (2.3). The invention of the axicon stimulated the development of a 211u001ewhole subclass of optical systems, currently known as meso-optical devices.
