Risk Factors for Oral Disease in Adult Diabetics

Insulin-dependent diabetics mellitus (IDDM) has been associated with several oraldiseases in adult populations (tooth loss, gingivitis, periodontitis). Only recently have risk factors (such as age, glycemic control and/or duration of disease) been studied for possible association with specific parameters of oral health in adult diabetic patients. This contract assessed the prevalence of periodontal diseases, caries, tooth loss, salivary dysfunctions, sensory impairment and soft tissue diseases in adult diabetic patients, examined the interrelationship among these oral diseases as well as with known medical diabetic complications (retinopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy, and cardiovascular disease) and examine possible risk factors that might correlate with oral health.
