Gaining Ground: World Well-Being 1950-95

This paper attempts to assess the validity of the well-being of life for ordinary211u001epeople in developing countries by bringing together the best available data on 211u001eindicators of well-being of people in developing countries over the period 1950 211u001ethrough 1995. The basic finding is that the conventional picture is wrong: there 211u001ehas been a steady and dramatic improvement in indicators of the quality of life 211u001efor ordinary people in developing countries. Throughout the developing world, 211u001epeople are living longer lives, they are eating better, and they are far more 211u001elikely to be literate than ever before in history.
