Most radomes consist of a solid laminate or sandwich type structure made of211u001efiberglass reinforced plastics. The use of Dyneema (trademark of DSM) fibers in a 211u001eplyethylene (PE) matrix instead of fiberglass reinforced plastics for radomes is 211u001every interesting because of excellent radar transparency of Dyneema/PE. However, 211u001ebecause of its sensitivity for creep, applications in aerodynamically loaded 211u001estructures are limited. The key problems facing their use in radomes are how to 211u001eimprove the mechanical properties to an acceptable level and how to mount the 211u001eradome on the radar pod. This paper presents the development of a Dyneema/PE 211u001eradome for airborne remote sensing. Several electrical properties and design 211u001easpects of the radome are discussed. The effect of the consolidation conditions 211u001eon the creep behavior and the configuration of the mounting system are described. 211u001eTest flight results are evaluted.
