Four different cathodic protection systems were installed and evaluated in the211u001ereinforced concrete tie beams and footings of four bents at the Queen Isabella 211u001eCauseway which links South Padre Island to the mainland of Texas. The types of 211u001ecathodic protection systems installed and evaluated were impressed current 211u001esprayed zinc, sprayed titanium, titanium mesh with overlay and sacrificial 211u001esprayed zinc. The primary objectives of this study were to monitor and evaluate 211u001ethe installation of the different cathodic protection systems, to evaluate 211u001eperformance of the cathodic protection systems, to establish recommendations for 211u001efull-scale application of cathodic protection for the Queen Isabella Causeway and 211u001eto establish recommendations for the implementation of cathodic protection 211u001esystems for marine bridge substructures in Texas. As part of this study, a pre-211u001einstallation condition for the Queen Isabella Causeway was conducted. The purpose 211u001eof the pre-installation evaluation was to assess the condition of the structure 211u001eand the feasibility of cathodic protection as a rehabilitation option. The 211u001einstallation of the different cathodic protection systems was described, and the 211u001einstallation of the anode systems was evaluated using constructability, 211u001eproductivity, safety and environmnental concerns, and aesthetics as the 211u001eevaluation parameters.
