NLR currently is co-developing a civil avionics application that connects211u001eaircraft subsystems with the aircraft flight deck by means of modern digital data 211u001ebuses. It combines, controls, processes, and forwards the data between the 211u001esubsystems and the flight deck. For this kind of application, certification is 211u001erequired by an independent, government-authorized third party. Guidelines for 211u001ethis certification are documented in the DO-178B standard: Software 211u001econsiderations in airborne systems and equipment certification. This paper 211u001edescribes practical experiences with DO-178B. The software development 211u001emethodology used to guarantee the reliability, maintainability, safety, and 211u001ecertifiability of the product in a commercial environment is discussed. 211u001eRequirements volatility and short time-to-market characterize the commercial 211u001ereality.
