Juvenile drug use, one of these critical areas, has risen significantly over the211u001epast several years, with one in two high school seniors in 1996 reporting having 211u001eused illicit drugs. While this problem is of concern in itself, the clear 211u001ecorrelation between substance abuse and other forms of delinquency gives further 211u001ereason for concern. The prevalence of juvenile drug use, therefore, burdens our 211u001ejuvenile justice system and places the future of our youth at considerable risk. 211u001eWhile we are working to reduce juvenile substance abuse by educating youth about 211u001ethe risks of drug use and reducing the risk factors that contribute to drug use, 211u001ewe must also intervene with youth who are using drugs. The first step to 211u001eeffective intervention, however, is to identify those youth who are engaged in 211u001esubstance abuse. Drug Identification and Testing in the Juvenile Justice System 211u001ehighlights findings from two projects funded by Office of Juvenile Justice and 211u001eDelinquency Prevention (OJJDP) to demonstrate innovative ways to identify and 211u001eintervene with substance abusing juveniles.
