In ground-penetrating radar equipment, one of the major problems is the mismatch of the antenna with respect to the ground. As a consequence a great part of the emitted power is reflected at the surface of the ground. In order to increase the amount of power that is transmitted into (and hence absorbed in) the ground, one wants to match the antenna to the ground. In this research a method is presented to design matching layer that consists of a number of dielectric layers. We start with a plane electromagnetic wave of a single frequency, that is incident perpendicular on a one-dimensional configuration. This configuration consists of two semi-infinite domains, one being the air, the other being the ground, with the matching layer in between. The modeling of the wave propagation into the ground using a known layer, i.e. the forward problem, is carried out both through the use of matrix methods and through the use of a source type integral equation over the layer domain and the ground domain.
