State and local health officials attending a 3-day workship examined the latestresearch findings on the uninsured and the effects on utilization and health status of not having coverage. The workshop featured leading public-private partnerships that provide health insurance coverage to children and described strategies for pooling the purchasing power of small businsses. Objectives of the workshop included providing an overview of the uninsured problem in the United States and how the problem affects the different population groups and geographic regions; discussing the differences between the uninsured and the insured populations as they relate to access and health status; reviewing the new Federal legislation that established the State Children's Health Insurance Program and the issues States face in implementing this legislation; describing current State
