Nutrition monitoring in the United States is a complex system of coordinated211u001eactivities that provides information about the dietary, nutritional, and related 211u001ehealth status of Americans; the relationships between diet and health; and the 211u001efactors affecting dietary and nutritional status. Nutrition monitoring and 211u001esurveillance data are used for Federal policymaking including food safety, food 211u001efortification, food labeling, dietary guidance, tracking progress toward 211u001enutrition and health objectives, and setting nutrition research priorities. 211u001eSurveys, surveillance systems, and other monitoring activities comprise the 211u001emeasurement component areas of the National Nutrition Monitoring and Related 211u001eResearch Program (NNMRRP), which was strengthened with the passage of the 211u001eMonitoring and Related Research Act of 1990. The Directory is part of an effort 211u001eto improve dissemination of nutrition monitoring data. The first Directory was 211u001epublished in 1989. The 1998 Directory represents an update and expansion of the 211u001esecond Directory, published in 1992.
