Distribution of Benthic Foraminifers (< 125 mu m) in the Surface Sediments of the211 Arctic Ocean

Census data on benthic foraminifers (>125 Micrometers) in surface sediment211u001esamples from 49 box cores are used to define four depth-controlled biofacies, 211u001ewhich will aid in the pale-oceanographic reconstruction of the Arctic Ocean. The 211u001eshelf biofacies contains a mix of shallow-water calcareous and agglutinted 211u001especies from the continental shelves of the Beaufort and Chuckchi Seas and 211u001ereflects the variable sedimentologic and oceanic conditions of the Arctic 211u001eshelves. Below 3,500 mwd, the deepwater mixed calcareous/agglutinated biofacies 211u001eof the Canada, Makarov, and Eurasian Basins reflects a combination of low 211u001eproductivity, dissolution, and sediment transport.
