Analysis of Satellite SAR Images for Change Detection over Land Areas

The main objective of this work is to develop methods for detecting and analyzing211u001esatellite SAR backscatter changes observed over land areas. Backscatter changes 211u001eare evaluated as a function of time, type of ground surface cover, SAR aspect 211u001eangles, SAR incidence angles and image types. Both SAR amplitude images and 211u001einterferometric SAR coherence images are used. The methods are applied on real 211u001espaceborne SAR data that are processed and distributed from Tromsoe Satellite 211u001eStation in Norway. This means more specifically that SAR image products from the 211u001eERS-1, ERS-2 and RADARSAT satellites are studied in detail. The test areas are 211u001elocated in southern Norway and on Svalbard, and the surface cover categories 211u001einclude: agricultural fields, forested areas, lakes, urban areas, mountaineous 211u001eregions, snow-covered landscape and glaciers. Ground truth from the test areas 211u001eare obtained from maps, aerial photos, optical satellite images, field 211u001eobservations and meteorological recordings.
