The study recommends a minimum seismic reliability level for critical equipment211u001esystems located in seismically vulnerable facilities. It describes a methodology 211u001eto achieve cost-effective risk mitigation and applies that methodology to a test 211u001ecase involving an automatic sprinkler system in a high-risk building. The study 211u001ebuilds on previously published works in this area that provide guidelines for 211u001eidentifying equipment systems that are important for either the normal operation 211u001eof a facility or for life safety protection. By making it possible to calculate 211u001equantitative risk scores, the methodology provides a basis both for evaluating 211u001ethe seismic adequacy of equipment systems and for making cost-effective equipment 211u001eretrofit decisions. The methodology is primarily for use in areas of high 211u001eseismicity.
