Matching Traffic Safety Strategies to Youth Characteristics: A Literature Review211 of Cognitive Development

In an effort to reduce the high crash rate and resulting injuries of young211u001edrivers, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has sponsored 211u001eresearch to assess the factors responsible for this heightened crash risk and to 211u001edetermine the implications for traffic safety programs. As part of this research, 211u001ethis review of research literature was conducted to determine what is known about 211u001ecognitive development and information processing capabilities of youth. The goal 211u001eof the project as to ascertain how traffic safety programs should be structured 211u001eto match these cognitive characteristics. The review is divided into 12 sections. 211u001eThis literature review focuses primarily on cognitive development from about 10 211u001eto 24 years of age.
