On July 16, 1993, the National Instiute for Occupational Safety and Health211u001e(NIOSH) received a joint request for a health hazard evaluation (HHE) from the 211u001eU.S. Forest Service employees and management. This HHE request was submitted 211u001ebecause of employee concerns that workers on tree-marking crews were experiencing 211u001ean increased number of miscarriages and children born with birth defects. 211u001eAdditionally, workers were reporting that the use of some brands of tree-marking 211u001epaints were causing respiratory irritation, nausea, vomiting, headaches, and 211u001efatigue. In response to this HHE request, NIOSH representatives conducted an 211u001eindustrial hygiene evaluation of current work exposures and practices and an 211u001eepidemiologic evaluation of adverse reproductive outcomes among women of 211u001ereproductive age within the U.S. Forest Service.
