The city of Helsinki is growing. The Pikku-Huopalahti Bay is developing into a211u001eplayful, colorful, post-modern housing area. The cultural transformation is 211u001edrastic. The area is a unique example of urban planning and the urban mentality 211u001efrom the eighties. The predicament of the planner at the end of the twentieth 211u001ecentury is the combination of different and even contradictory elements and 211u001eapproaches to the city. He can no longer lean on his technical or aesthetic 211u001eauthority alone; rather he must be able to communicate with new types of experts, 211u001eas well as new and more self-confident citizens. The same complex of challenges 211u001eis, naturally, faced by urban and regional studies which try to understand these 211u001enew tendencies in urban development, as well as develop new tools for the 211u001eplanner. Also, the cultural studies approach is regarded increasingly as 211u001eimportant in urban studies, as it is being realized that cities in themselves 211u001esignify and convey meanings, and that these meanings in turn affect the physical 211u001ereality through people's actions and reactions. Planning should also pay heed of 211u001ethis interaction. The articles in this book give a quick overview of the extent 211u001eof this work.
