Environmental Exposures and Their Effects on the Immune System, Moore County,211 North Carolina

The Objective was to investigate whether or not residence in Aberdeen, the site211u001eof the Aberdeen Pesticides Dumps Site (a National Priority List Superfund Site 211u001econtaining organochlorine pesticides, volatile organic compounds and metals) is 211u001eassociated with detrimental effects to the immune system as indicated by the 211u001eincidence of herpes zoster and the recent occurrence of other common infectuous 211u001ediseases. Study participants included 1642 residents, ages 18-64, who had 211u001eresponded to a telephone survey during the spring and summer of 1994. The survey 211u001easked about potential occupational and recreational exposures to pesticides and 211u001eother chemicals, and about lifetime history of herpes zoster (shingles) as well 211u001eas the recent occurrence of other common infectious diseases. Stratified and 211u001elogistic regression analyses were used to compare the cumultive incidence of 211u001eherpes zoster among Aberdeen residents and residents of nearby communities 211u001econtrolling for potential confounders and effect modifiers.
