FTA's Access to Jobs program authorizes $750 million to fund innovative transit211u001esolutions for welfare recipients and low-income individuals over the next six 211u001eyears. This report highlights public transportation's key role in assisting 211u001ewelfare recipients and low-income individuals in their journey from welfare to 211u001ework. It discusses the new transportation demands that welfare-to-work programs 211u001eare generating, the geographic isolation of welfare recipients, and the 211u001edisconnect between conventional transit systems and suburban job growth, as well 211u001eas the innovative and specialized public transit services created to innovative 211u001epractices in welfare-to-work transportation. It summarizes those welfare reform 211u001etransportation challenges and presents innovative welfare-to-work transportation 211u001estrategies developed by the states, metropolitan planning organizations, and 211u001etransit agencies to solve the welfare transportation issue. It addition, the 211u001ereport details the most pertinent research relating to welfare transportation, 211u001efederal funding sources for welfare transportation, and current technical 211u001eassistance efforts on the subject.
