Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS): 1997 Insurance Component Data Collection211 Instrument

This document contains the data collection instrument used in the 1996 Insurance211u001eComponent of the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey. The Medical Expenditure Panel 211u001eSurvey (MEPS) is conducted to provide nationally representative estimates of 211u001ehealth care use, expenditures, sources of payment, and insurance coverage for the 211u001eU.S. civilian noninstitutionalized population. MEPS is a co-sponsored by the 211u001eAgency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR) and the National Center for 211u001eHealth Statistics (NCHS). MEPS comprises four component surveys: the Household 211u001eComponent (HC), the Medical Provider Component (MPC), the Insurance Component 211u001e(IC), and the Nursing Home Component (NHC). The MEPS IC collects data on health 211u001einsurance plans obtained through employers, unions, or other private health 211u001einsurance sources. Data obtained in the IC include the number and types of 211u001eprivate insurance plans offered, benefits associated with these plans, premiums, 211u001econtributions by employer vs. employee, eligibility requirements, and employer 211u001echaracteristics. Designed as an annual panel suvey, each year the MEPS IC sample 211u001eincludes approximately 7,000 establishments identified through the MEPS HC, 211u001e27,000 identified through the business establishments list frame, 1,900 211u001egovernments from the Census of Governments, and 1,000 self-employed persons.
