Health Outcome Follow-Up Study of Residents Living Near the Caldwell Systems,Inc. Site, Caldwell County, North Carolina

Caldwell Systems, Inc. (CSI) operated a hazardous waste incinerator in CaldwellCounty, North Carolina, from 1977 to 1988. This incinerator burned chemicals used by the regional furniture and pipeline indusctris, as well as torpedo fuel from the U.S. Navy. During 1991, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry conducted a cross-sectional survey of the prevalence of symptoms and diseases among residents living within 1.5 miles of the incinerator and residents of a comparison area. That study revealed higher prevalences of respiratory, neurologic, and irritant symptoms among target area residents and ATSDR then did a follow-up study during 1993 to further compare the affected systems of both areas. A questionnaire and biologic tests were made.
