Due to its structurally efficient form, thin-walled cylinder are frequently211u001eutilized to transmit various combination of axial, torsional, pressure, bending 211u001eand transverse shear loads. Stability issues form a common problem for thin-211u001ewalled structures which experience compression. For instance, the problem 211u001econcerning the stability of the axially compressed cylinder is very well known. 211u001eFor more than 50 years, many investigations, found in the literature, have 211u001efocused on the axial compression problem. A cylinder subjected to bending and 211u001etransverse shear load experiences compression as well as tension, thus it is very 211u001epossible that the loss of stability is also one of the important failure 211u001ephenomena. However, bending and transverse shear loads are often not considered 211u001eas a primary loading case in thin-walled cylinders. As a result, less efforts 211u001ehave been put into the bending and transverse shear problem than the axial 211u001ecompression problem. This lack of information on this subject in the literatures 211u001ehas partly prompted the present investigation on the failure of thin-walled 211u001ecylinders under combined bending and transverse shear loads.
