Acoustic Emission Monitoring of Fatigue Cracks in Steel Bridge Girders

This report presents results from a laboratory study and field implementation of211u001eacoustic emission monitoring of fatigue cracks in cover-plated steel bridge 211u001egirders. The acoustic monitoring successfully detected growing fatigue cracks in 211u001ethe lab when using both source location and a state of stress criteria. 211u001eApplication of this methodology on three field bridges also proved successful by 211u001edetecting a propagating crack in two of the bridges and an extinguishing crack in 211u001ea third bridge.
