摘要

This design guide was developed by the U.S. Architectural and Transportation211u001eBarriers Compliance Board (the Access Board) in collaboration with the U.S. 211u001eDepartment of Transportation (DOT)/Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to 211u001eassist public works and transportation agencies covered by title II of the 211u001eAmericans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in designing and constructing public 211u001esidewalks and street crossings. The recommendations in this publication may also 211u001ebe applied to shared-use paths that occupy a public right-of-way. State and local 211u001etransportation engineers, planners, landscape architects, civil engineers, and 211u001eothers who design pedestrian facilities will also find useful guidance here for 211u001eimproving existing public pedestrian circulation networks to be more usable by 211u001epedestrians who have disabilities. This design guide consists of two parts. Part 211u001eI contains an overview of ADA title II obligations, particularly as they affect 211u001enew construction and alterations in the public right-of-way. Part II contains 211u001ebest practices recommendations--and the rationale behind them--for the design, 211u001econstruction, alteration, and retrofit of public pedestrian facilities.
