This report reviews the epidemiology of rotavirus, describes the licensed211u001erotavirus vaccine, and makes recommendations regarding its use for the routine 211u001eimmunization of infants in the United States. These recommendations are based on 211u001eestimates of the disease burden of rotavirus gastroenteritis among children in 211u001ethe United States and on the results of clinical trials of the vaccine. Rotavirus 211u001eaffects virtually all children during the first 5 years of life in both developed 211u001eand developing countries, and rotavirus infection is the most common cause of 211u001esevere gastroenteritis in the United States and worldwide.
