摘要

The principal purpose of this report is to evaluate the water-transmitting211u001eproperties of sediments that immediately underlie the channel of the Rockaway 211u001eRiver at Dover, NJ, a locality selected because the ratio of pumpage from 211u001eriverbank wells to low stream-flow was larger here than in most river reaches. 211u001eSeveral methods of determining rates or velocities of induced infiltration were 211u001eapplied at this locality, including (1) simultaneous precise streamflow 211u001emeasurements upstream and downstream to determine seepage losses, (2) chemical 211u001emixing models to determine the ratio of river water to native ground water, and 211u001e(3) use of dissolved oxygen and temperature as natural tracers to determine 211u001evertical flow velocities through the streambed. Six ground-water flow models of a 211u001e2.5-mi reach of the Rockaway River valley were constructed to verify whether the 211u001eestimated water-transmitting properties of the riverbed are consistent with other 211u001eknown or estimated aspects of local hyrogeology. The models were also used to 211u001etest a new procedures from simulating recharge to stratified-drift aquifers in 211u001evalleys that was developed by Northeast Glacial Aquifers RASA and accounts for 211u001erecharge from precipitation on the adjacent uplands as well as on the valley 211u001eitself.
