Tuna Fisheries, Trade and Market of Japan

Japan has long been the world's largest harvester as well as consumer of tuna.211u001eRecently, however, while the Japanese demand for tuna has increased and the 211u001edomestic catch has remained level, its share of the world catch has decreased 211u001esharply. To fill this increased demand for tuna, Japan has increased tuna imports 211u001efrom $133 million worth of tuna in 1976 to $1.5 billion in 1998. Imports are 211u001elikely to remain high due to a number of difficult challenges faced by the 211u001eJapanese tuna fishery. This report provides detailed examination of the Japanese 211u001etuna fishery, imports, exports, supply, demand, and market, in order to identify 211u001epotential opportunities for export by U.S. producers.
