An extensive theoretical investigation has cases where the behavior of the seabed211u001esoil is undrained. A brief review of previous research on the uplift behavior of 211u001esuction caisson under uplift loading is included, and results of finite element 211u001emodeling are presented. The finite element predictions have been validated by 211u001eexisting rigorous solutions obtained independently using the limit analysis 211u001etechnique from the theory of plasticity. A simplified method for the estimation 211u001eof the uplift capacity for suction caissons is described, based on the results of 211u001ethe finite element study. The failure mechanisms observed in the FE modeling are 211u001ealso discussed. The expressions developed in this paper take into account the 211u001einfluence of the aspect ratio of the caisson, the point of application and angle 211u001eof inclination of the loading, and the undrained shear strength of the soil.
