In-depth information about how energy was used in residential housing units that211u001ewere occupied year-round is provided by the Energy Information Administration 211u001e(EIA) in this analysis of the 1997 Residential Energy Consumption Survey results. 211u001eThe uses and costs of residential energy (excluding vehicle fuels, primarily 211u001egasoline) were analyze by using household's energy-related characteristics, such 211u001eas location, type (for example, single-family), size, number of household members 211u001eand vehicles, and age. The average household spent most of their energy dollars 211u001eon refrigeration, other appliances, and lighting, followed by space heating. Over 211u001e45 percent of the average household's energy costs was for energy used in 211u001eappliances and lighting, while space heating accounted for another 30 percent. 211u001eWater heating and air conditioning expenditures accounted for the remaining 211u001eenergy expenditures in the average household.
