A series of reduced-scale experiments were conducted to investigate the burning211u001eand water suppression of rack-storage commodity fires. The objective of the 211u001eresearch is to support the NIST Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS), a computational 211u001efluid dynamics model that endeavors to predict fire growth, spread, sprinkler 211u001eactivation, and suppression by water in rack-storage commodity fires. The model 211u001erequires appropriate and implementable sub-grid algorithms that adequately 211u001erepresent the full-scale heat and mass transfer that occurs in a warehouse fire 211u001ewith rack-storage of standard commodities. In particular, this report describes 211u001eexperiments that investigated the effect of water application on the time 211u001erequired to achieve ignition of the unburned commodity and on the heat release 211u001erate of the burning commodity. Several types of experiments were conducted. These 211u001einclude ignition measurements using the LIFT apparatus and the cone calorimeter, 211u001eand heat release rate measurements using oxygen consumption calorimetry. All of 211u001ethese measurements were made with and without water application.
