摘要

The focus of the research is the city center of Kyoto and there, the group of211u001ethirty-five hoko neighborhoods known for the organization of the Gion Festival. 211u001eAt the present moment the wooden town heritage in the are is threatened in a 211u001enumber of ways. Such threats are both the threatening effects of town planning as 211u001ewell as the lack of appropriate urban conservation policies. Focusing on a few, 211u001eselected landmarks and areas has led to the compartmentalizing of the city and to 211u001ethe failure of municipal authorities to identify culturally dependent and place-211u001eoriented value-categories. In the process the heritage evaluation methods in use 211u001ehave played more than a minor role. The methodological approach taken in the 211u001ethesis aims to an approach where the dwelling patterns and cultural patterns are 211u001eidentified as an inseparable entity. Such an approach is especially important in 211u001eKyoto where traditional townhouses were never just residential spaces but had 211u001eimportant production and cultural functions as well. Cultural values are analyzed 211u001ethrough the of the Screen Festival. The wooden townhouse context plays an 211u001eimportant role as the scenic stage of the festival.
