Broad trends in food production and prices indicate a decline in the share of211u001epeople who do not have access to adequate food levels. However, the aggregate 211u001efigure masks variation in food security among regions, countries, and income 211u001egroups within countries. The food security position of low-income countries is 211u001eevaluated by projecting the gaps between food consumption (domestic production, 211u001eplus commercial imports, minus non-food use) and consumption targets through the 211u001enext decade. The targets are: (1) maintaining per capita food consumption at 1996-211u001e98 levels (also referred to as status quo), and (2) meeting minimum recommended 211u001enutritional requirements.
