A series of novel materials for optical limiting have been synthesized and211u001echaracterized using the z-scan technique. Cumulenes are shown to have promising 211u001eoptically non-linear behavior for optical limiting devices. Modification of these 211u001emolecules can potentially give high two-photon absorption cross-section that 211u001eenable strong optical limiting properties in the transparent regime 400-900 nm. 211u001ePlatinum (II) acetylides are found to be transparent in the visible and also show 211u001eoptically non-linear absorption in this wave-length range. The preparation of 211u001eseveral organo-metallic cluster molecules with extensive pi-conjugation network 211u001ewas successful. The latter materials were shown to generally have good optical 211u001etransparency in the visible. Further non-linear optical characterization is in 211u001eprogress. The materials are being synthesized and optimized in close 211u001ecollaboration with University partners within the laser protection sub-project of 211u001ethe 'photonics in defense applications program'. Preliminary time-resolved 211u001emeasurements have been made in collaboration with PRL-SUNY (USA). An 211u001einvestigation of how to perform standardized tests and evaluations of optical 211u001elimiting materials and devices has started within the established collaboration 211u001ewith DSTO.
