EXXON VALDEZ Oil Spill Restoration Project Final Report Responses of River Otters211 to Oil Contamination: A Controlled Study of Biological Stress Markers 211 (Restoration Project 99348)

In this study, the authors experimentally determined the effects of oil211u001econtamination on river otters. Fifteen wild-caught male river otters were exposed 211u001eto 2 levels of weathered crude oil (i.e., control, 5 ppm/day/kg body mass, and 50 211u001eppm/day/kg body mass) under controlled conditions in captivity at the Alaska 211u001eSeaLife Center in Seward Alaska. Responses of captive river otters to oil 211u001eingestion provided mixed results in relation to biomarkers. Although hemoglobin, 211u001ewhite blood cells, alkaline phosphatase, and possibly interleukin-6 211u001eimmunoreactive responded in the expected manner, other parameters did not. 211u001eAspartate Aminotransferase Alanine Aminotransferase haptoglobin did not increase 211u001ein response to oiling or decrease during rehabilitation. In addition, although 211u001eexpression of P450-1A increased in captive river otters during oiling, several 211u001einconsistencies in the data complicated data interpretation.
