Advanced information technology has allowed the development of various techniques211u001ethat make it possible to realize precision agriculture. Precision agriculture, or 211u001esite-specific management, (SSM) indicates that differences in soil and crop 211u001econditions within a field are the basis for 'precise' forms of management which 211u001ediffer as the agricultural equipment moves over a field. Important here are the 211u001eGlobal Positioning Systems (GPS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The 211u001eattractive aspect of precision agriculture is the optimization of growth 211u001econditions while losses to the environment are minimized. Next to the more 211u001eefficient use of fertilizers and biocides, which is economically attractive, an 211u001eincreasing number of farmers favor, therefore, SSM practices. By balancing 211u001ecriteria for crop growth with criteria for losses of agrochemicals to the 211u001eenvironment, some important conditions for sustainable agricultural production 211u001esystems are met.
