Computer-controlled dependable systems play a crucial role in modern society.211u001eThese systems can be encountered in many application domains, from multimedia 211u001esystems to food processing machines. The design of dependable real-time systems 211u001eis very complex and calls for computer aided support. Scheduling is one of the 211u001eimportant stages in the design trajectory. The input of the scheduler should 211u001edescribe all relevant features of the application. The aims of this paper are 211u001etwofold. Firstly, a survey is made of relevant timing characteristics in 211u001eapplications from different domains. Secondly, a model is presented which 211u001ereflects all important concepts of dependable real-time systems (such as 211u001ereplication and communication). The model incorporates all the timing 211u001echaracteristics which are discussed in the survey. It is shown how different 211u001etemporal behaviors can be expressed in the model.
