Medicare Physician Payments: Need to Refine Practice Expense Values during211 Transition and Long Term

This report responds to your request that we continue to monitor and report on211u001eHCFA's ongoing efforts to develop resource-based practice expense RVUs. 211u001eSpecifically, we focus on (1) our evaluation of whether the new methodology is an 211u001eacceptable approach for revising Medicare's fee schedule; (2) questions raised 211u001eabout the data, assumptions, and adjustments underlying the new methodology that 211u001eneed to be addressed during the 3-year phase-in period; and (3) the need for 211u001efuture updates to the practice expense RVUs to reflect changes in health care 211u001edelivery and for beneficiaries' access to physician's care.
