In response to your request, we are reporting on four areas related to Health211u001eCare financing Administration's (HCFA) use of personally identifiable health 211u001einformation: (1) HCFA's need for personally identifiable health information to 211u001emanage the Medicare program and accomplish other purposes; (2) HCFA's policies 211u001eand practices regarding disclosure of information on Medicare beneficiaries; (3) 211u001ethe adequacy of HCFA's safeguards for protecting the confidentiality of 211u001eelectronic information and HCFA's monitoring of others' protection of beneficiary 211u001einformation; and (4) the effect on HCFA of state restrictions on the disclosure 211u001eof confidential health information.
