North Central Great Plains Derecho Producing Mesoscale Convective Systems211 (DMCSs): A Forecasting Primer

Synoptic-scale patterns favorable for producing derechos in the Northern Plains211u001eare examined with the goal of providing pattern-diagnosis techniques for 211u001eidentifying environments within derecho activity corridors. Nineteen derechos 211u001ewere identified across the Northern Plains region during 1986-1995. These systems 211u001eformed during the warm season months of May through August. The synoptic 211u001eenvironment at the initiation, midpoint, and decay locations of each derecho was 211u001eevaluated using surface, upper air and re-analysis datasets.
